Tracing the birth and evolution of modern sneaker culture is enough to fill a book (literally), but here’s one place to start: the Nike Air Force 1. Originally released in high-top form in 1982—the low followed a year later—the shoe was almost discontinued in 1984. But enthusiastic fan support, plus a bevy of colorways pushed by local retailers in Baltimore, Maryland, helped save it from the discard pile. And while other models from the era certainly hold a hell of a lot of sway in the sneaker world (ahem, the Air Jordan 1), the AF1 not only predated them but also introduced, early on, an artistically iterative model that’s become a staple of the culture.

If you’re a sneakerhead, you’re probably ready to do one of two things. 1) Nod in tentative agreement with my truncated but not entirely dumb take on the subject, or, 2) Throw your phone/computer/internet connected Tamagachi across the room, hunt me down, and tell me exactly what an idiot I am. That’s cool! Either way, you’ve got to admit: The Air Force 1 isn’t just a sneaker—it’s an icon. Here’s why you should have it in your rotation.

It’s accessible.

Okay, okay. Bear with me here. Because while the hype machine is arguably the most powerful force in the modern sneaker game, there’s something kind of perfect about a shoe that has bona fides—and doesn’t require lining up if you want a pair. Will a clean white AF1 low break necks at a convention? Will it rack up likes on Instagram? Maybe not. But it’s a damn good shoe that everyone—from high-school kids to their moms and dads—can appreciate. And considering the ever-shortening hype cycle, there’s something to be said for rising above the fray and simply wearing a pair of sneakers because they’re classic. Just saying.

It’s built for new ideas.

There’s a very good reason all those OG Baltimore retailers pushed for more and more colorways of the Air Force 1: the shoe is a canvas. The number of iterations since then—some mind-blowing, some misfires, and some middle of the road—boggles the mind. And while not every one is an unqualified winner, that’s not really the point. The AF1 is open to interpretation. Whether from fans or designers or influencers, new versions are always cropping up. That’s exactly what keeps it exciting.

It’s versatile as hell.

While I’m never going to scoff at a good one-off colorway or collab, I’m also a big fan of something simpler. A basic white pair shows off just how well the lines have aged over the years, and it works with everything in your closet. Plus, while low-profile kicks have their place, the AF1′s bulkier silhouette feels especially relevant right now, as our hems are getting wider and we need to balance things out. As our outfits shifts, white AF1s are a no-brainer. Of course, you might not feel the same way—though I urge you to see the light and give ‘em a try. But if it’s not your thing, that’s fine! Just find one of the many, many other versions and wear in good health. That’s the beauty of the Air Force 1.

As you know, 2018 has been one of the busiest years on record in the history of the timeless Air Jordan 1. Between original colorway drops, remixed takes on fan-favorites, and high profile collaborations with industry heavy hitters such as Union and even Paris-Saint Germain, it seems like there is a must-have AJ1 dropping just about every month – if not more. Beyond that, the oft-slept on Jordan 1 Mid is enjoying its own bustling campaign, with a bounty of in-line releases with flavorful color schemes that often times harken back to its “big brother” of sorts. Dressed in a vibrant array of vivid hues including teal, purple, red, and golden yellow, this upcoming offering touches on the more playful and audacious end in contrast with previous understated versions such as the white/black/silver that just recently hit stores. An official look is just below so expect its Nike.com drop to go down in the near future.

It’s been a good year for ladies-only Air Jordan 1s. From the “Satin Shattered Backboard” to the “AWOK” Jordan 1 High Zip in collaboration with Vogue, female sneakerheads have had an opportunity to get their hands on many a desirable pair. Now, the AJ1 has surfaced in another special makeup for the ladies: an all-black mid-top dressed in shiny patent leather, a material the classic silhouette is no stranger to. The entire upper is dressed in the eye-catching material, making for a look that’s understated in color but flashy in concept, and the stitched seams provide an interesting extra touch of textured detailing. The rest of the shoe is then kept simple, as the midsole and outsole are also done up in black. Equally at home being rocked with a dressy pantsuit as they are with a comfy pair of jeans, these new Air Jordan 1 Mids are available now at Finish Line for a standard retail price of $110 USD.

Thanks to the ever-popular “Shattered Backboard” line of Air Jordan 1s, orange, sail and black has become a hot color combo for the legendary silhouette. The Air Jordan 1 Mid has gotten in on the Halloween-esque color-blocked fun before, and now it’s set to do so again with the upcoming release of a grade school-only “Team Orange” colorway. The upper’s overlays feature a bold orange tumbled leather, while a faint peach appears on the underlays for an interesting tonal contrast. The collar and midfoot Swoosh both call upon a stark black for a touch of dark detailing, and the likeable look is then rounded off by blue laces/tongue detailing, a white midsole, and an orange outsole. These new 1 Mids will likely release later this month on Nike.com for $90 USD, so enjoy a full set of official images below, and keep it locked right here for info on a specific release date as it becomes available.

Two of the most highly demanded Air Jordan 1 releases of 2018 was the Off-White Air Jordan 1 in White, and the Union Air Jordan 1 – which debuted in two different color options.

Virgil dropped the White colorway exclusively at select retailers in Europe, and instantly became one of the hardest Air Jordan 1s to get.

Los Angeles-based menswear boutique edition of the Air Jordan 1 combined original colorways of the classic silhouette into one shoe. This version combined the body of the “Black Toe” with the ankle of the White and Grey colorway.

SoleFly’s Miami Hurricanes-inspired Air Jordan 1 collab—originally released exclusively in South Beach during Art Basel last year—could be seeing a wider release in the near future.

Official product images of the “Shattered Backboard”-like colorway recently appeared on Nike’s website, which suggests that an online release could be on the way. If recent launches are any indication, don’t be surprised if this drop with little warning at all with a SNKRS “shock drop” reminiscent of releases like the “UNC” Off-White x Air Jordan 1.

As of now, a re-release has yet to be officially confirmed, and resell prices for this pair are currently averaging around $2,000.
